Minecraft Nether portal calculator
Divide your Overworld X and Z by 8 (rounding down) to get the matching Nether coordinates; multiply the Nether ones by 8 to go back. Y does not change. Type your coordinates below and build the other portal at those coordinates.

Worked examples
The same rule applied to a few points, if the calculator does not load (JavaScript off):
| Overworld (X Y Z) | Nether (X Y Z) |
|---|---|
| 800 64 -1600 | 100 64 -200 |
| 7 64 8 | 0 64 1 |
| -1 70 -9 | -1 70 -2 |
| 1234 70 -567 | 154 70 -71 |
| Nether (X Y Z) | Overworld (X Y Z) |
|---|---|
| 100 64 -200 | 800 64 -1600 |
| -3 30 5 | -24 30 40 |
| -1 70 -2 | -8 70 -16 |
How it works
Divide by 8
One block in the Nether is eight blocks in the Overworld, horizontally. Going to the Nether, the game divides X and Z by 8. Y is left as it is.
Rounding, and negative numbers
The division rounds down, toward minus infinity. So Overworld X = -1 gives Nether X = -1 (not 0), and X = -9 gives -2. Positive numbers just lose their remainder: X = 7 gives 0.
The linking search range
When you step through, the game works out the target point, then looks for an existing portal near it. In the Nether it searches within 16 blocks. In the Overworld it searches within 128 blocks, which is 16 times 8. If it finds one it sends you there; if not, it builds a new portal. The asymmetry is the 8-to-1 scale.
Where to build the second portal
Light the first portal, write down its coordinates, and convert them. Build the other portal at those coordinates, within the search range: 16 blocks in the Nether, 128 in the Overworld. Aim for the exact point and you will stay linked even if the terrain pushes you a few blocks away.
Keeping portals apart
Because the Nether search radius is 16, two Overworld portals whose Nether targets are within about 32 blocks of each other can end up on the same Nether portal. Spread them by more than 256 Overworld blocks (this threshold is our inference from the two radii, not a number from the game).
Height limits
The Nether is 128 blocks tall, Y 0 to 127, with bedrock at the bottom (Y 0 to 4) and the top (Y 123 to 127). The calculator warns when the Y you give cannot be built on in the Nether.
FAQ
How do I convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?
Divide X and Z by 8 and round down. Keep Y. For example 800, 64, -1600 becomes 100, 64, -200.
How do I convert Nether coordinates to the Overworld?
Multiply X and Z by 8. Y stays the same. For example 100, 64, -200 becomes 800, 64, -1600.
What is the Nether portal search range?
In the Nether the game looks for a portal within 16 blocks of the target point; in the Overworld, within 128 blocks.
Why did my portal link to a different portal than the one I built?
Another portal was inside the search range of your target point. Move the portals further apart, or build the new one closer to the exact converted coordinates.
Does this work on Bedrock Edition?
This page covers Java Edition. We have not checked Bedrock Edition, so do not rely on it there.
